A special lady who will always be in my heart.
Firstly I must say a huge thank you to Linda Westron who bred Roma. Roma was my first Pointer and holds a very special place in my heart. She came into my home to be a much loved addition to the family and has become so much more.
Roma and I started going to our local dog training club, both for socialisation and a bit of training for me! As the club worked towards the Kennel Club Good Citizen Awards I thought we may as well give it a go, it was something to work towards. By the age of 15 months Roma had achieved her Bronze, Silver and Gold KC Good Citizen Awards.
A short 10 months later came ’ Maddie’ and it was at this time I was persuaded to have a go at showing. I thought I many as well have a go with Roma as well. We entered our first open show and won our class and Reserve Best of Breed which was a very exciting start!
Although not shown much now Roma did her share of winning, qualifying for Crufts every year she was shown. One of her most memorable days was winning Reserve Best in Show at West Country Dog Club open show in Sept 2004. Since becoming a veteran she has won a number of veteran classes, BVIS and a placing in the Veteran class at Crufts. She loves to show and is a joy, always enthusiastic but a real fidget!
Roma has shown good working ability and we have had a lot of fun on training courses in Scotland and enjoyed the few occasions we have been grouse counting in Wales. I have not done much more with her as she has proven to be gun shy. She has taught me a lot, both in the show ring and in the field. This has helped me achieve more with my second Pointer ‘Maddie’ and has fuelled my obsession with Pointers.
Roma is the most loving, kind, even tempered dog who adores everyone. I was getting Roma registered as a PAT Dog (Pets As Therapy), however spare time in which to fulfill the appointments was going to be an issue. Then as fate would have it my neighbour asked whether I would consider letting one of the dogs go to their house to offer some companionship for their physically disabled son. Well there was no question, Roma got the job of going round a few times a week to give and receive cuddles!
